Thirunageswaram is Situated six kilometers of East Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District. This is the place where Lord Raaghu Performed ritual worship to Lord Sive. Because of this place is called Thirunageswaram. In this Temple Lord Naganathawamy is in outer praharam (pathway) South- West corner. Lord Raaghu with two consorts is giving Dharsan to this devotees. According to the legendary history the Lord Raaghu not only performs ritual to Lord Naganathswamy, but also showers His bliss on devotees who come and adorn him.
Among the nine planets,”Mars” is more powerful than Saturn; Mercury more powerful than Mars; Jupiter is more than Mercury; Venus more than Jupiter; Moon more than Venus; sun more than Moon; but both Raaghu (The Moon’s Ascending Node) and Kethu ( The Dragon’s Descendant Node) are more powerful than these planets aforesaid. If Raaghu plants is in the 7th place frome Lagna the marriage will get delayed and the married life will have ups and downs and if it is in the 5th place it would be difficult to have children. In order to mitigate this, Raaghu bahavan must be appeased throuh abisekha, alangara and Archana Eventhough Lord Raaghu at Rameswaram, Kalahasthe and Thirukallar is weel- Known, at Thirunageswaram. because Lord Raaghu is with his two consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni, Lord Raaghu is worshipped as Mangala Raaghu (benedictory). Lord Raaghu grants all benfits to those who come and perform special rituals including milk bath, and thousands of devotees throng here every Sunday and perform rituals during Raaghu period of the day that is between. 4.30 and 6.pm.
The old sacred books say how the Raaghu and Kethu Planets came into being. According to Astrology, the effects of Raaghu planet is beyond normal measurement. The earth Planet is circling the sun Planet in a a looped circle and like wise Moon Planet also circles the Earth ( Mercury) Planet, The planet defire meets Earth twice when Moon comes in the way of the earth. While going upward at a particular angle and place, it is called Raaghu while Moon crosses earth at its lower base, it is called Kethu. In English. Raaghu is called “ Ascending Node’s and Kethu as’ Descending Node’. Therefore both Raaghu and Kethu are shadow planets only. Both these planets go round the earth one at the top and other at the bottom with difference 1800 in opposite direction, anti-clockwisez
If milk is poured over the five head -hood of Raaghu Baghavan, it turns into blue colour at this place in particular. On 16-02-1986 a full length snake skin measuring five and half feet in length was found around the neck portion of the idol and this confirmed the fact of Lord Raaghu granting boons to devotees worshipping Him and from that day onwards, the snake skin is kept in a glass-box inside the temple for Dharsan by the visiting pilgrims, According to the Lyrics of saint Thirunavukkarasar Swamigal, Lord Naganthaswamy is enabling the devotees to get rid of all troubles and difficulties through Raaghu Baghavan. All are welcome to this sacred place for worshipping Lord Naganthsamy with his consorts Piraiani amman, Girigujambikai and also Raaghu Baghavan to get over all diificulties and to get all happiness and prosperity in life.
Saint Manickavasaga praised Lord Sive as owner of the entire South Zone and belonging to all the people residing in every nook and corner of the universe. What ever the saint might have meant by this, is considered appropriate to mean and to represents all the 274 sacred places dedicated to Lord Siva which places are not only sacred, but also full of plenty and prosperity. Among these, 127 temples are located on the southern side of the river Cauvery and the shrine at Thirunageswaram is the 47th place. the Chozha Nadu has many names such as Vala nadu, Chozha Chennai, Abaya Nadu, Killi Nadu, Sembiya Nadu, Akalanga Nadu, Peruneer Nadu,and Ponni Nadu, The place Thirunageswaram is at a distance of 6 Kms East of Kumbakonam. It is served by more than one river and canal, rich in soil and called granary of south India. This sacred shrine has many songs sung by three out of the four celebarated Nayanmars. Saint Sekkizhar is said to have lived in this place according to Umapathi Sivachariyar who praised Sekkizhar very grealy. At this place, Sekkizhar got scent of supreme Knowledge at the feet of the Lord Naganatha swamy. As a proof for this, the sculptures of Sekkizhar his mother Azhakambika and his brother Balaravayar are found installed inside the temple. This temple which was renovated by Sekkizhar lies on the North of river Arasalar and South West of Thiruvidaimarudhur. This palce is also called Senbagavanam, Girikannikaivanam etc., because Lord Raaghu worshipped Lord Naganathaswamy at this place it is known as Thirunageswaram. Our forefathers ordained that to have complete bliss one must have Dharsan of Lord Naganathaswamy at Thirunageswaram in the evening. Very near this place there is one of the important vaishnavite worshipping place called Thiruvinnagaram or Oppiliyapppan Koil. For one who visits the place Thirunageswaram, it is vear essential to have Dharsan of Lord Oppliyappar as well “details about this Place as found in the book south Indian Cultural (English)” The Village is now named not only after Naganathaswamy Temple, but also in Oppliyappan or Thiruvinnagar shrine referred to in the Prabandas.According to Sive tradition this place is noted for the woship of Indra. The God’s name is chanpaharanyeswara and the theertha is Indra is Indra theertha (S.I.I) Once upon a time, Umadevi worshipped Lord siva and expressed her desire to hear the answers for questions about the state of omnipotency, omni- presence, omni- divinity and Lord Parameshwara gave the answers and these are found in later half Poudiga Purana.
As described by Saint Thirugnana Sambanthar this temple is having coconut groves and facing East. The Temple has four high towers on all the four sides. There are four broad Temple car streets, three praharas and one side- land. On entering the Temple through the East high tower which has five stories, one can see Lord Ganesa in dancing form the Bull and Lord Vinayaga on the left side. There is tank called Sooriya Theertha. There is also a Vinayaga Temple in the first pathway (prahara). There is a big mandap where the various carrier designs bearing the forms of bull, peacock etc. are kept. There is also a Mandap where nine idols of the Navagrahas are installed. In the pathway adjacent of main deity there are separate places for Lord Vinayaga, Lord chandrasekara, Lord Muruga and Lord Panchalingas, Lakshim etc., On the Northern side, the idols of 63 Nayammars, Lord Nataraj and the bedroom sannathi are aranged. Besides we can see the idols of sekkizhar, Balaravyar their mother and the four celeberated Nayanmmars, the sculpture design of the bull installed just North of this place and Sekkizhar idol are very attractive. The design inner prahara has similarity with design of the temple of Somaskantha. This can be understood by the very placement of the principal deity Lord Muruga and the Goddess. The idols of Maheswars group are installed here. The seperate Temple where Girigujabika idol is installed has great significance. In the outer pathway of this temple there are sculptures of many saints and this makes us to remember about the prominent role played by the people belonging to samana sect. The ancient installations at Sannapuram, East of Thirunageswaram Strenghen this view. Goddess Girigujambika is in the style for doing penance and by her side the idols of Saraswathy and Lakshmi are installed. since the form is not one made of stone Abishekha (Pouring of water etc.) in not performed. Every year during the Tamil months Aadi (July - August), Thai (January - Febrauary) The Goddess is adorned with Punugu. Goddess Girigujambika is the family deity of hundreds of families and these people throng here and perform rituals in a grand manner and get the Bliss. In this place it is found that there are two forms for the presiding deity and two forms for His Consorts,one called Naganathswamy and the other one as Arthanareeswara; like wise two forms for the Goddess one called Piraiani amman bearing the Moon as ear - ring and another Known as Girigujambika (woman having hill - high - breasts) this temple is 800 feet long and 600 feet broad. Our Hindu Temple afford facilities to worship Lord Siva in Idol form and in imaginative form. the Linga form portrays the imaginative form and it is found in a temples dedicated to Lord Siva. In order to have in mind the imaginative form of Lord Siva, there is bed room design called palliyarai in all Temple and a big mirrior is installed inside it. Our forefathers have built big Temples with facilities to have the Dharshan of the Lord in either form according to one’s own desire.
